Introduces New Text to Register to Vote before October 5 Deadline

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector & Voter Registrar, Ann Harris Bennett, announces the creation of a text to register to vote feature to help increase voter registration before the October 5, 2020 voter registration deadline. Users can text #RegisterHarris to 832-957-1957 to register to vote.

“The text to register to vote technology will direct eligible unregistered voters to my office’s convenient online Voter Registration Portal,” Bennett said. “This new voting resource will allow mobile users to register to vote quickly and safely before the October 5, 2020 deadline to vote in the November 3, 2020 General Election.”

State law requires that eligible voters register 30 days prior to voting in any election.

Eligible unregistered voters may fill out a voter registration application on the Voter Registration Portal. Once completed, the application must be printed, signed by the person applying and then mailed to the Tax Office. The state of Texas does not allow online voter registration as a physical signature is required on a voter registration application. Completed voter registration applications should be mailed to:

“Allowing access to voter registration resources via mobile phones provides a larger number of eligible voters another opportunity to register to vote,” added Bennett. “Registered voters who have moved, or who have changed their names, may also update their voter registration record by using the texting feature.”

All applications must be postmarked by October 5, 2020 in order to be accepted by the state’s 30-day voter registration deadline.
