Delinquent Property Tax Notices in the Mail

Taxpayers Urged to Arrange a Payment Plan to Avoid Collection

Harris County, TX - Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett reminds property owners with delinquent property taxes to either pay their unpaid tax bill in full or to set up a payment plan by June 30, 2019 to avoid having their accounts turned over to collection attorneys.

“My office recently sent out over 95,000 delinquent property tax notices to property owners with unpaid property taxes,” said Bennett. “I encourage those property owners who are unable to pay their delinquent property tax account in full to call the Tax Office to see if they qualify for a payment plan. A payment plan will still incur the accrual of penalty and interest, but it will prevent delinquent accounts from being turned over to collection attorneys and assessed additional fees.”

In accordance with state law, the Tax Office must send all delinquent tax accounts to collection on July 1, 2019. These accounts will be subject to an additional 15-20% in attorney’s fees. Property owners whose accounts remain in delinquency could ultimately face lawsuits for unpaid property taxes.

Installment payment plans consist of 12 monthly payments. All payments must be received by the due date specified in the payment agreement and the balance must be paid off by the deadline stated in the contract. The first payment is due at the time the agreement is signed.

Requests for an installment payment plan may be made through the Harris County Tax Office website at www.hctax.net, by phone at 713-274-8000, by email at tax.office@hctx.net or in person at any Tax Office location.

Payments by cash, check, money order or credit card are accepted at all Tax Office locations. Credit/debit card or e-check payments may be made online at www.hctax.net or by phone at 713-274-2273. Checks and money orders may be mailed to P.O. Box 4622, Houston, TX 77210-4622.
