Last Day to Pay 2019 Property Taxes is January 31

Harris County Tax Offices will stay open late to help property owners

Harris County, TX - Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett reminds property owners that the deadline to pay their 2019 property taxes is the last day of the month, January 31, 2020.

“All Harris County property owners have until January 31 to pay their property taxes to avoid accruing penalty and interest charges. All Tax Office locations will be open until 5:30 p.m. to assist property owners with their payments,” said Bennett. “I urge property owners to reach out to the Tax Office either in-person, by phone or by email for any assistance they may need.”

Per state law, all property tax accounts that remain unpaid after the January 31 deadline will be considered delinquent and will begin to accrue penalty and interest charges.

“State law mandates that penalties and interest must be added to all delinquent property tax accounts and the Tax Office has no authority to waive any of the financial penalties and interest charged,” said Bennett. “I encourage any property owner to contact my office if they believe that they will be unable to pay their entire property tax bill before the deadline. My office accepts partial payments and will also explain how property owners can enter into a property tax payment plan. We’re here to help”

Property tax payments may be made by cash, check, money order or credit/debit card at all Tax Office locations. Checks and money orders may be mailed to P.O. Box 4622, Houston, TX 77210-4622.

Credit/debit card or e-check payments may be made online at www.hctax.net or by phone at 713-274-2273. A non-refundable surcharge of 2.35% is added to all credit card payments. A flat fee of $3.95 is charged to all Visa debit card payments. There are no fees charged for payments made by check or e-check. Cash is only accepted at Tax Office locations.

A payment drop box will be available beginning on January 29 during normal business hours at all Tax Office locations. A property owner’s property tax account will be updated in approximately 10 business days after their payment is received.
