Tax Bill Deadline is January 31st

Penalty and interest begin to accrue on February 1st

Houston, TX - Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett reminds taxpayers to pay their property taxes prior to the January 31st deadline to avoid penalty and interest charges. All Tax Office locations will remain open until 5:30 PM on January 31st.

Taxpayers have multiple options for paying their taxes. Payment can be made in person by cash, check, money order or credit card at any of the 15 Tax Office locations throughout the county.

Checks or money orders may be mailed or sent by common couriers, such as UPS or FedEx, but must be postmarked on or before January 31, 2019. Taxpayers should be aware that the price of a first-class stamp will increase from 50 cents to 55 cents effective January 27, 2019. Mailed payments that are returned due to insufficient postage could result in late payment. Penalty and interest will be added to the late payment, even if it was originally postmarked before the deadline date.

Payment by credit card or e-check can be made by phone at (713) 274-CARD (2273) or online at www.hctax.net. E-checks are free. When paying by credit card, a 2.35% fee will apply.

“I want all of our customers to be able to settle their accounts quickly, conveniently, and on time. I strongly encourage taxpayers to utilize online payments for maximum efficiency and convenience. If you cannot pay your full tax bill by the due date, partial payments are accepted. Beginning February 1st, you also have the option to enter into a payment agreement,” said Bennett.

On February 1st, penalty and interest will begin accruing on all delinquent bills and will continue to increase each month until the bill is paid.
