Mike Sullivan Reminds Taxpayers Property Taxes are Due

7% penalty begins on February 1, 2014

(Houston) – Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan reminds taxpayers that property taxes are due by January 31, 2014. Failure to pay by the end of the month will result in a 7% penalty and interest.

“We’re in the homestretch for taxpayers to pay their property tax bill by the end of the month,” said Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan. “Currently, we have collected $1,217,468,502 during the first two months of the 2013 current collection year. With more payment options available, it’s great to see more taxpayers taking advantage of the advancements we’ve made to better serve them.”

On February 1, 2014, a 7% penalty and interest will accrue on delinquent property tax bills that have not been paid and penalty and interest will continue to increase every month until the bill is paid. “Once the bill becomes delinquent, if a taxpayer has trouble paying their property taxes, we ask them to contact us and see if they qualify for a payment agreement,” said Mr. Sullivan. “We want every resident to know that they have options when it comes to paying their property taxes and my office is here to help.”

Taxpayers who wish to pay their property taxes can do so by mail, phone (713) 274-CARD (2273), online at www.hctax.net or in person at any of the 16 Tax Assessor-Collector’s Offices throughout Harris County. In addition, all property tax bills have a QR code so taxpayers can pay by using their smart phone.

If taxpayers are paying by mail, the envelope must be postmarked by January 31, 2014. Meter mail is not a postmark. New legislation now allows courier mail services like UPS and FedEx to be used, as long as the service receives it by January 31, 2014.

All taxpayers are responsible for paying their property taxes. If a resident has questions or has not received their property tax bill, please contact our office by calling (713) 274-8000 or emailing tax.office@hctx.net.

The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office Property Tax Division maintains approximately 1.5 million tax accounts and collects property taxes for 71 taxing entities including Harris County. For the 2013 tax year, the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office expects to collect approximately $5 billion of property tax payments.
