HOUSTON – March 3, 2008 – Harris County Voter Registrar Paul Bettencourt reminds registered voters who need to verify their voter registration status for tomorrow’s Primary Election to call the Tax Office at 713-368-VOTE (8683) or visit the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net. The Election Day Call Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow to help callers.

“I encourage registered voters to call us or check online before going to vote tomorrow,” said Bettencourt. “Our 120 Election Day Call Center employees are trained and ready to field as many as 40,000 calls from voters, election judges and others,” Bettencourt added.

The Harris County Tax Office Web site, www.hcvoter.net, is a complete resource site for registered voter information in Harris County. The Web site contains a database of all 1,826,231 registered voters in Harris County including voter registration status, with downloadable precinct data and maps.

“7,971 first time voter registration applications were received after the effective date necessary to vote in tomorrow’s primary election. These voters can check our Web site at www.hcvoter.net to see the effective date of their voter registration,” said Bettencourt. “State law requires persons who wish to vote be registered 30 days prior to the election date. Also, 27,178 additional voter registration applications were received after the cut-off date, primarily voter address changes that will be effective for the run-off in April,” Bettencourt added.

The 120 trained employees will be on shifts using a projected Election Day forecast prepared using historical trends updated with early voting statistics. In every election, there is a relationship between the calls we receive and the turnout. The Election Day Call Center at 1001 Preston,1st Floor Conference Room is open to all who want to stop by and see the current turnout trends.

For more information, registered voters may call 713-368-VOTE (8683) or visit the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net.
